PostNord is investing in new sorting systems from Fives to help it handle fast-growing parcel volumes at two key locations.

Fives, a provider of smart automation solutions, will provide the postal operator with two turnkey sorting systems in PostNord’s facilities in Norway and Germany.

In the new logistics centre in Drammen, Norway, which is set to open in April, PostNord will take delivery of Fives’ high speed GENI-Belt sorter and the modular EASY-Stream conveyor. The system will be able to process 15,000 items per hour.

Meanwhile, in Travemünde, Germany, PostNord will modernize an existing centre with Fives’ GENI-Belt sorter and EASY-Stream conveyor. The project will be completed by the end of February.

Located outside Scandinavia, this facility is strategically positioned to handle shipments between the north and the rest of Europe. The facility will transition from using a manual system able to handle 4,000 parcels per hour, to becoming a modern and automated facility that can handle 9,000 items per hour.

Both solutions in Germany and Norway have been tailor made by Fives to ensure PostNord can increase efficiency and meet customer demands in Northern and Central Europe. The system in Norway, specifically, will be installed in a new facility built to strengthen the network in the Nordic countries.

Pål Eier, Head of Production Development at PostNord Norway, said: “PostNord has a winning strategy in parcel: we have a special focus on the business to consumer segment, which is driven by the rapid growth in e-commerce. Item volumes have doubled in the past five years, and we expect the same to happen in the coming years, on a higher volume.

“Fives’ handling system will give us a boost in capacity: it meets our demands when it comes to sorting in many directions for distribution, to be cost leader,” added Eier.
