Compared to 2008, letter volumes slightly fell in 2009 by 3.7% from 2.7 billion letters whileparcels volumes remained similar with over 100 million parcels delivered.

In terms of letter processing, Swiss Post completed its new letter processing system in March2009 with a new cost-effective logistics system now functioning to the highest level. It resultedin improved delivery times thanks to the phased commissioning of the three new letter centres andsix regional logistics centres after the postal operator had suffered a temporary drop in qualityin 2008.

Swiss Post said it holds a leading position in terms of its delivery times by internationalcomparison, while still managing to keep prices relatively low. The requirements of the FederalCouncil have been continuously exceeded, the postal operator stressed. It clearly exceeded thespecifications of the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC),which require a minimum of 97% of mailed items to be delivered on time.

On the international level, the group’s delivery quality is also high. Despite the slightdecline experienced in 2008, Swiss Post came second out of 25 national and private postal operatorssurveyed that year, based on figures from the International Post Corporation (IPC). The postaloperator is also at the forefront in terms of letter prices. In the European letter post index2008, it was the fifth cheapest company for letters, and third cheapest in the parcel post index.
