Finland Post to invest EUR 150m in sorting centres

Finland Post said this week it would spend EUR 150 million on new mail sorting centres andequipment over the next few years – its biggest investment in decades.


 
The group, known as Post Finland and which is rebranding its business and internationalactivities as Itella as of 1 June, says the enhancement of its mail handling facilities will allowit in the future to ensure a “reasonably priced nationwide mail delivery service for public andbusinesses alike”.

A new sorting office will be built in Oulu and existing facilities in Tampere and Kuopio willbe expanded and post offices refurbished. It is buying new letter-processing equipment from Frenchcompany Solystic for installation in Helsinki and the above three centres next year. The fullsystem will be operational by 2010, Post Finland said.

“With these investments, we wish to ensure our future competitiveness and position as themost significant operator in this sector in Finland as more and more communications are madeelectronically and as competition intensifies. We therefore have strong faith in the futureprospects of physical distribution as part of multi-channel solutions for reaching addressees,”said Kari Kivikoski, director of Itella’s mail communications division.

Post Finland delivers around 12 million items every working day to 2.4 million households and240,000 businesses. Itella currently handles deliveries of letters, magazines and direct marketingliterature.
