Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recognises bpost climate goals

bpostgroup’s ambition is to drive down its greenhouse gas emissions significantly by 2030 and, in doing so, to contribute to restricting global warming to 1.5°C. SBTi has now certified that bpostgroup’s emission targets meet its science-based criteria.

After a thorough investigation by independent experts, the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) officially confirmed that bpostgroup’s climate goals fulfil all SBTi criteria and are in line with the science. bpostgroup will significant reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and in doing so actively contribute to restricting global warming to 1.5°C.

Up to 55% lower carbon emissions by 2030

bpostgroup has undertaken to cut scope 1 and scope 2 emissions by 55% by 2030. This covers direct emissions due to fuel consumption and indirect emissions due to energy procurement. In addition, the scope 3 emissions – greenhouse gas emissions relating to procured goods and services, transport and distribution, waste from operations, business trips and employee commuting – must be cut by 14%.

At bpostgroup we have made a permanent commitment to shrinking our ecological footprint. As an international group, we want to show leadership in sustainability and respect for the planet. We have launched initiatives to make our fleet greener, including Ecozones and zero-emission deliveries. SBTi certification shows that the group is acting responsibly to realise its ambition to make an increasingly active contribution to ensuring a sustainable planet for everyone.

Philippe Dartienne, CEO bpostgroup, said: “Sustainability is an integral part of our strategy and remains a fundamental priority going forward. We must play an active role in driving social change and our ambition is to become an industry benchmark for sustainability. This certification is an important milestone for our group. Clearly, this is just the first step and we must permanently mobilise our group to achieve our targets for 2030.”

Corporate goals based on science

SBTi, the Science Based Targets initiative, provides businesses with the scientific frameworks they need to make the transition to a low-carbon economy. As a socially responsible company, bpostgroup has set its corporate goals in line with the Science Based Targets (SBT) approach for direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions in the short and long term. After an in-depth assessment, they were confirmed to be line with the criteria and recommendations and were declared science-based.

SBTi set two ambition levels for participating businesses to show their engagement on behalf of the planet. Businesses can commit to help keep global warming below 2°C or to go further by committing to 1.5°C. bpostgroup chose to set ambitious targets to help keep global warming below 1.5°C.
