Logistics property developer Panattoni has started building two new major facilities for Amazon Logistics in Germany.

One is in Wilhelmshaven on the North Sea coast and the other is close to Magdeburg in eastern Germany.

The first is a distribution centre at the Jade-Weser-Park, an inter-municipal industrial estate situated in direct proximity to JadeWeserPort. Panattoni is erecting a facility with 6,895m² of logistics space and 1,422m² of office space and social areas on the 63,786m² site. The distribution centre is set to be completed in early 2021.

The new distribution centre, which Amazon plans to use to process last-mile logistics for B2C shipments, will benefit from an advantageous location: Wilhelmshaven is a key location for logistics and business and enjoys outstanding connections to the international transport network. The A 29 and A 31 federal autobahns are also in the immediate vicinity and can be reached quickly.

“We are thrilled with the project at Jade-Weser-Park. Wilhelmshaven not only has Germany’s only deepwater port in the form of JadeWeserPort, it also has a robust economy spanning all sectors. Amazon’s decision to settle here and create new jobs is a further boost to the local economy. We are also pleased that Amazon has again placed its trust in us. This is yet another example of our partners returning to benefit again from our expertise and experience,” said Fred-Markus Bohne, Managing Partner of Panattoni.

The Magdeburg distribution centre comprises 6,666 m² of logistics space and 1,025 m² of office space and social areas on a 60,000 m² site, and is scheduled to be handed over to Amazon Logistics ready for the Christmas 2020 peak season.

Panattoni is implementing this project in the Rothensee industrial complex in Magdeburg, which already has established infrastructure. The distribution centre will have excellent access to several federal autobahns, such as the A2 and A14. Magdeburg is a dynamic location for economic growth in eastern Germany and, thanks to its central location between the urban centres of Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig, is becoming an increasingly important location for e-commerce and logistics.

After taking out a long-term lease for the premises, online retailer Amazon will use the new distribution centre for last-mile logistics in B2C shipments. The building concept developed by Amazon combines classical distribution centre elements with a cross-dock concept, in which vehicles load goods at the side of the distribution centre.

The two latest projects will be Panattoni’s fourth and fifth logistics centres for Amazon in Germany. The others are located near Düsseldorf, Kaltenkirchen near Hamburg, and Knüllwald, near Kassel in central Germany.
