Hongkong Post suspends parcels to ‘bullying’ US over ‘exorbitant’ tariffs

In a strongly worded attack on President Trump’s ‘unreasonable, bullying and abusive’ imposition of ‘exorbitant’ tariffs, Hongkong Post today (April 16) announced it is no longer accepting postal parcels destined for the USA.

As a result, exporters in the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) as well as in neighbouring mainland China will be forced to seek alternative ways of getting their goods to the USA or try to export them to other international markets instead.

The move comes after the US administration ended de minimis imports of low-value parcels from China and Hong Kong. From May 2, packages valued under US$800 will be subject to a 90% tariff or a flat fee of US$75. In parallel, the US has imposed extreme tariffs of up to 145% on virtually all imports from the two territories.

Hongkong Post already briefly suspended acceptance of goods for the US for a few days in early February when President Trump first ended de minimis imports from China and Hong Kong before having to backtrack within a few days.
