Amazon extends German logistics network with two more facilities

Amazon is creating 1,700 more jobs in Germany

Amazon is continuing to expand its logistics network in Germany with plans for a new logistics center in Mönchengladbach and a sorting centre near Hanover.

The US e-commerce giant announced yesterday that it will open a new logistics center in Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, creating more than 1,000 full-time jobs. Amazon already employs several thousand people in North Rhine-Westphalia where it has three facilities at Rheinberg, Dortmund and Werne.

Amazon did not provide further details of the new facility, which will be its fourth in Germany’s most populated federal state. However, German media reported that it will be about 140,000 sqm, and thus larger than any of its existing facilities in Germany.

Roy Perticucci, head of the company’s European logistics network, said: “We are looking forward to further expanding our network with the new logistics centre in Mönchengladbach and thus creating more than 1,000 full-time jobs. North Rhine-Westphalia offers a fantastic infrastructure and has dedicated employees whom we would like to join our Amazon team – with competitive wages and extensive benefits from day one."

Separately, Amazon announced that its second location in Lower Saxony will open at Garbsen near Hannover in the fourth quarter of this year, German media reported. The new 35,000 sqm sorting centre will create some 700 jobs. Locally-based construction group Baum is investing some €70 million in the new building.

Amazon already operates a facility at Winsen in the northern German state.
