Correos, unions dispute impact of third strike this month

Spanish postal workers take strike action

Spanish postal workers held a third day of strike action last week to demand pay rises and better working conditions but there are very different claims about the extent of the impact.

Unions CCOO and UGT claimed that more than 80% of Spanish postal workers took part in the one-day action across the country last Friday (May 22) but Correos said that there was only about 15% participation.

The strike follows two separate one-day strikes earlier this month. About 25% of postal workers took part in the first stoppage on May 4, according to the company, while unions claimed turnaround was about 85%.

Unions are demanding negotiations over a new collective agreement including pay increases to restore purchasing power lost in recent years, higher staffing levels and conversion of part-time jobs into full-time ones.
