US parcel deliveries return to normal after heavy snowstorm

Parcel deliveries in the northeastern USA have largely returned to normal after several days ofdisruption caused by a heavy snowstorm at the start of the week.

Winter Storm Juno swept across northeastern US states at the start of the week, burying much ofNew England under more than 30 cm of snow, although it did not impact on New York City as much ashad been feared. However, authorities shut down much of the metropolis on Tuesday as aprecaution.

In response, parcel and express firms were forced to halt collections and deliveries in largeparts of the northeastern USA on Tuesday, and then gradually resumed operations on Wednesday andThursday as the severe weather conditions eased.

UPS cancelled all pickups or deliveries in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,Rhode Island, Vermont, and portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York on Tuesday. OnWednesday, it started to resume deliveries in most areas but there no pickups or deliveries inMaine, as well as areas of Massachusetts and Long Island, New York. By yesterday operations hadresumed in most areas, although service was still impacted.

FedEx said on Wednesday that although contingency plans were in place, some service delays anddisruptions could be anticipated for inbound and outbound shipments in many of the northeasternstates. Yesterday the company told customers that due to the hazardous conditions delays couldstill be expected in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
 
The US Postal Service, with its extensive operations, was heavily hit and was forced tosuspend delivery and retail operations on Monday afternoon in a large area from Maine to NewJersey, including in New York City and Boston. By Wednesday, however, it had managed to resume fullservice in most locations, with all processing operations functioning normally. The postal operatorsaid yesterday that it had resumed regular operations.

DHL Express pick-up and delivery services were impacted early in the week in Connecticut,Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, RhodeIsland, Vermont and Virginia.
