UPS spends $17.5m to double California facility capacity

UPS is investing $17.5 million to double the capacity of its delivery center in Menifee, about130km south of Los Angeles, to handle increased shipping volumes ready for the forthcoming peak

season.

The parcel company is in the midst of a $175 million investment programme to increase itssorting and delivery capability across the USA to cope with strong volume growth.

“We’re ready with more capacity to serve customers’ eastward growth in Southern California’sInland Empire,” said Noel Massie, president of the South California District. “The growth ofwarehouse and distribution operations, as well as residential construction in the region, hasnecessitated the need to expand our facilities and operations.”

The expanded facility, which will open in late September, will increase processing capacityfrom 4,000 pieces to 10,000 pieces per day. The expanded space will cover 49,407 square feet andinclude 10 tractor-trailer doors and room for 108 delivery vehicles. The interior space also can bereconfigured to support increased demand around the peak holiday shopping season. Advancedtechnology equipment that can scan, measure and weigh packages, and affix labels will accelerateprocessing and increase sorting efficiency.

Nearly 35 delivery routes were transferred from the nearby Riverside and San Bernardinofacilities to serve customers more efficiently and position the region for continued growth.

In addition to expedited package processing capability supported by advanced technology andconveyor systems, the facility will have expanded vehicle parking and an enlarged UPS CustomerCenter.

UPS purchased the building in 2007, along with adjacent land, to serve the southern portionof Riverside County, including Menifee, Murrieta, Perris and Temecula. The new facility increasesthe number of employees to 236, a gain of 19 permanent jobs. Hiring is underway for new positionsand for the upcoming seasonal demand.
