Belgian postal operator bpost has introduced a new city logistics environmental initiative inAntwerp with the aim to reduce truck traffic and thus keep city centres cleaner.
The company explained that the growing number of trucks increasingly threatens mobility in andaround cities and makes logistics companies waste time when delivering shipments in urbanareas.
As part of the new project, delivery providers serving the city centre and port of Antwerp cannow drop their cargo at bpost’s specially equipped depot on the outskirts of the city. The postaloperator will then make combined same-day deliveries using its own fleet.
“The environmental and mobility gains will result in a cleaner, more liveable city. Thisbenefits all parties: hauliers, city, traders and residents,” bpost explained.
By the end of the trial period, a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted. “Subject to goodfinancial and operational results, the service will be offered in other large Belgian cities,” thecompany concluded.
