UPS expects to deliver 29 million parcels across the globe today (December 17) which would markthe company’s record for a single day, in line with its ‘Peak Week’ now taking place from 16-20
December.Yesterday, the company estimated it had picked up over 34 million parcels during its 107thholiday season. With 29 million estimated packages, UPS expects to deliver 300 packages per secondtoday and handle more than 78 million tracking requests, its busiest tracking day of theseason.
In preparation for the Peak Week, UPS is deploying nearly 100,000 vehicles including packagecars, vans, tractors, motorcycles and alternative fuel vehicles. In addition, over 2,388 UPS cargoflights will operate daily around the world this week, which is 465 more than on a typical day inNovember, the company stressed. To cope with the holiday peak volumes, UPS hired 55,000 seasonalworkers.
“The entire team at UPS has planned all year to handle the annual increased shipping volumeduring the holidays,” Alan Gershenhorn, chief sales, marketing and strategy officer at UPS, said.“As consumers change the way they shop for holiday gifts and shipping needs shift, customers relyeven more on UPS for trusted and convenient solutions around the globe.”
UPS customers can ship their parcels until Monday, Dec. 23, to arrive on time for Dec. 24, usingUPS air services while The UPS Store network of over 4,300 locally owned and operated locationsacross the USA is available for shoppers to pack and ship holiday gifts.
FedEx had previously announced that December 2 would be its busiest day with some 22 millionestimated parcels and an 11% increase over the last year’s peak day. The company is expected tocomment on its Christmas business trends when it releases its Q2 results tomorrow.
