Hermes Germany has officially opened a new depot in Nuremberg, southern Germany, after only 19weeks of construction, creating 52 new jobs in the region and further expanding its infrastructure
in the country.The company has invested around €7.2 million in the new facility as part of the project “Depotof the Future” which comprises overall investment of €120 million in the construction of 18 newdepots. Last week, Hermes also inaugurated another logistics centre in Munich-Schweitenkirchen andnow counts nine logistics centres in Bavaria overall.
The Nuremberg depot started operations already back in autumn 2012 with up to 8 millionshipments per year processed since then and distributed to Hermes customers across northernBavaria.
The delivery district around Nuremberg covers 8,000 square kilometres. From the depot with anoverall area of 18,000 sqm, 30,000 shipments are handled on a daily basis and delivered to privateand business customers in the metropolitan area of Nuremberg. In addition, the depot serves 291Hermes parcel shops across Bavaria. This is made possible through two modern sorting chains put ontop of each other with the capacity to sort up to 10,000 shipments per hour at a speed of 2.0m/s.
“The new depot is among the most modern facilities in the Hermes network and strengthensconsiderably our presence in southern Germany. With the new site, we are again setting standards inthe industry in terms of technical performance but also social and ecological compatibility oflogistics properties,” Philip Nölling, CFO Hermes Logistics Group Germany, said.
“As a parcel provider, we are required more than ever to adapt to the growing demands withregard to volumes, speed and service in view of the booming distance and online trade. With oursites, we sustainably adjust to this future growth,” he added.
Similar to all Hermes facilities, the Nuremberg depot put a priority on ecological aspects withthe real estate being planned and constructed according to the silver standard of the GermanSociety for Sustainable Building. Moreover, Hermes deploys vehicles with alternative engines aspart of its national fleet to constantly improve its C02 efficiency during transportation.
The dense network of over 14,000 Hermes parcel shops across Germany guarantees goodaccessibility for parcel customers. In European comparison, the company has the largest, nationwidenetwork of reception points in private parcel shipping.
