DHL Express is to begin using two new-generation B747-8 freighters this quarter, increasing itscapacity in the Asian and transpacific markets, following an agreement with leasing group Atlas
Air.These recently launched aircraft will be the first of their type to be flown for DHL Expressand will replace two Boeing 747-400 freighters that are currently in service for DHL Express. Theaircraft will be operated by Atlas Air under an ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance)arrangement within the Polar Air Cargo Worldwide express network, for the benefit of DHL Express.
The B747-8 freighter is effectively a stretched B747 aircraft that uses new-generationengines and other technology, which together provide increased capacity and improved fuelefficiency. With a maximum payload of around 130 tonnes, they have almost 20 per cent more capacitythan a standard B747-400 freighter.
