Norway Post and its parcel business Bring are likely to raise prices in Sweden due to expectedcost increases following new reductions in truck weight limits to 40 tonnes introduced for road
transport in and out of Sweden this summer.“The changes came as a surprise to the haulage industry and will have major consequences, leading to more vehicles on the roads, shortage of equipment, increased transport costs and ahigher environmental burden,” the Norwegian postal operator said in a statement.
“The effect of a change in practice in Sweden is also increased costs and thus the need for costrecovery. This will mean a price increase. The size of the increase is under consideration,” itsaid.
Norway Post is now working with the industry to convince the Swedish authorities to get back tothe former weight limit of 60 tonnes with a total vehicle length of 25.25 metres.
Despite the introduction of the new directive, Norway Post said the Swedish authorities havereacted positively to amending the legislation to continue previous practice. “While we are waitingfor resolution of the problem, Norway Post and Bring will adapt their transport to the lower weightlimit and the vehicle lengths.”
In an attempt to ensure the re-introduction of the former weight limit and vehicle lengths,Norwegian and Danish transport ministers wrote letters to their Swedish colleague on the issue.
