TNT Express Germany has moved its air cargo operations for the metropolitan area of Berlin fromTegel airport to Berlin-Schönefeld where the future Berlin Brandenburg international airport will
be opened in March 2013.The new airport will replace the city’s three airports, Tegel, Tempelhof (already closed) andSchönefeld (the former East German city airport) which will be closed in 2013 while some of itsinfrastructure will be incorporated into the greatly expanded airport area to the south. The newBerlin Brandenburg airport was due to open at the start of June this year but has been delayeduntil next March for technical reasons.
In Schönefeld, TNT Express is operating nine weekly flights, like previously in Tegel, and has a1,000 sqm handling facility together with 100 sqm of office space.
TNT Express Germany explained that the relocation is necessary due to the upcoming closure ofTegel in 2013 where it has been operating part of its air cargo processes for the metropolitan areaof Berlin. The move of the regional Air Gateway will benefit customers in Germany and Poland, thecompany stressed. In addition, the company is also relocating its site in Berlin-Charlottenburg toSchönefeld.
“Customers entrust us with their shipments because we deliver them reliably and quickly as aquality provider,” Thomas Kraus, Managing Director TNT Express Germany, said. “The site change inBerlin brings time savings that we pass on to our customers.”
This also improves the delivery times for the connected branches in Rostock and Magdeburg whilethe pick-up times in the area of Rostock can be extended. The locations in Poland includingStettin, Posnan and Gorzów Wielkopolski gain time for import and export shipments.
The move to Schönefeld should have initially taken place in parallel to the inauguration of thenew Berlin Brandenburg airport. The delayed opening of the new airport, however, has not had anyimpact on the relocation of TNT Express as the TNT Air Gateway is situated in the existing aircargo area of Schönefeld airport.
