PostNL Parcels is investing €240 million in 18 new depots to modernise and expand its Dutchinfrastructure to cope with a sharp increase in volumes in recent years boosted by the strong

growth in e-commerce.

As part of the company’s modernisation efforts, the 18 depots where both sorting anddistribution will take place replace the 4 current sorting centres and 37 distribution centreswhich will streamline operations through handling all essential processes at the same site.

The latest depot is located in Den Bosch, in the south of Netherlands, with 250 new jobs to becreated in the region. It is the fourth depot to open as part of the new logistics infrastructurebeing set up by PostNL’s parcel division. Other new sites in the Netherlands have been recentlyopened in Utrecht, Elst and Waddinxveen.

Over the next few years, PostNL plans to open 14 more sites across the Netherlands so that all18 depots are operational by 2015 to create a logistics network with the capacity to handle 140million parcels. The people employed in the current logistics network will transfer to the newinfrastructure.

Gerrit Mastenbroek, Managing Director of PostNL Parcels, said: “We are delighted with the launchof our fourth ‘new-style’ depot. The capacity of this depot is essential if we are to meet theever-increasing demand for parcel delivery and to improve the already excellent quality. Last year,Dutch consumers placed more than 77 million orders online, worth almost €9 billion. The newlogistics infrastructure offers us and our customers a host of benefits when it comes to time, quality and efficiency. It enables them to use services like Checkpay, PostNL Checkout andPakjegemak, all of which help meet their urgent needs and wishes: order it today, get it deliveredtomorrow.”

As part of its environmental commitment, PostNL has implemented various sustainable measures atthe new sites resulting in lower CO2 emissions.
