Dental supplier cleans up with UPS eco-packaging certification

Safco brush tips and handles

US dental products supplier Safco is beaming after becoming the first company in the UnitedStates to be certified under the UPS’s Eco Responsible Packaging Programme.

Illinois-based Safco Dental Supply Company, a leading supplier of dental products, teamed withUPS to optimise its packaging for damage prevention, right sizing and materials content. As aresult, Safco’s package damage rate decreased by over 50%, resulting in a significant benefit forcustomers, the company and the environment.

The new packaging allows the company to deliver products, including many fragile andliquid-based items, to customers in the good condition they expect. Better packaging means thatdental offices avoid the hassle of having to arrange for a replacement for a damaged product andthe possible treatment delays that may result.

“We’ve always tried to do what’s best for our customers, and more reliable, eco-friendlyshipping is a key part of this commitment,” said Ken Saffir, president of Safco.

To earn certification, Safco had to have each box it prepared for shipping evaluated by UPSaccording to procedures vetted by SGS Group, a global leader in inspection, testing andverification services. All packaging had to meet stringent criteria for damage prevention (sincedamage creates waste), right sizing (to avoid excess packaging) and materials content (utilisingpackaging with a more sustainable profile). After three months and numerous redesigns, Safco metall the requirements and today is able to feature the UPS Eco Responsible Packaging Programme logoon all packages it prepares and ships.

“We recognized Safco as a company that cares about conservation and protecting the environment, and we were proud to partner with them early on to achieve our mutual mission, which is to save theearth’s valuable resources and better serve customers in the process,” said Randy Seibert, UPSSolutions Manager.
