FedEx Express has expanded its Hong Kong airport facility to enable greater cargo handlingcapability and to strengthen its on-time delivery commitment to customers.
The expansion saw the facility’s floor space expand by 37% to 4,695 sqm, and the addition ofnew equipment, staff and storage area for more efficient cargo handling capability. A keyimprovement is the facility’s ability to process three freighter loads of cargo in just under 45minutes, the company said. To support operations of the expanded facility, FedEx increased thenumber of staff by 5% and set up additional office space within the premises.

The improved facility now has a total of 14 trucking docks and four direct ramp accessgates. New equipment includes an additional extendable conveyor belt (two in total) for loading andunloading individual packages, two new scissor lifts (five in total) for airfreight containers,and five docks for pallet shipments. FedEx also installed an additional 748 sqm ofcaster decks to accommodate more airfreight containers and faster movement of freight shipmentsdirectly to the ramp.
The expansion follows several service enhancements in Asia over the last two years, the companynoted. In 2010, FedEx extended the call-in cut-off time for shipments from Hong Kong to theAmericas by two hours to 18:18, the best cut-off time in the market. Then in June 2011, it improvedthe delivery time of FedEx International Priority Freight shipments in Hong Kong to 12:00 noon, theearliest in the market. In September 2011, it further expanded its FedEx International Economy andFedEx International Economy Freight services to 14 key markets in Asia.
