Hermes UK introduces over 600 sophisticated hand-held terminals

Hermes new hand-held terminal

Hermes UK has rolled out over 600 upgraded hand-held terminals from Belgravium, a leadingBritish manufacturer of mobile computing hardware, in response to customers’ demand for more

transparency on their shipments.

The new ‘Atlanta 5000’ mobile computing hardware ensures fast, reliable and accurate datacapturing at key tracking points for all items that Hermes handles across the UK. Belgravium hasbeen a key supplier of mobile computing solutions to Hermes since the late 1980s when the homedelivery provider was called Parcelnet. The upgrade placed in June 2011 was successfully rolled outacross 23 depots in 6 weeks.

Belgravium stressed that the ultra rugged Atlanta 5000 Series simplifies superior data capturewithin any scanning scenario and that it was selected “for its well balanced, lightweight designthat was capable of surviving the rigours of the Hermes operation”.

The British hardware supplier explained that Hermes’ customers are increasingly demandinginstant visibility and information on their purchases. Therefore, Hermes decided to upgrade thebarcode technologies used throughout its fixed depot and hub locations and by its drivers. Thefundamental requirement was to provide state-of-the-art visibility of shipment information betweenHermes and its end user. After thoroughly evaluating several major mobile computer solutions,Hermes made the decision to upgrade their solutions with Belgravium, its long-term supplier.

The upgrade will allow shipments to be scanned and tracked throughout the parcels receipt, dispatch and returns processes within the Hermes’ hubs, depots and delivery vans. This will provideHermes and its clients with key data on all parcel movements, Belgravium added.

“Hermes continues to be excited by the potential of the solution upgrade in relation to furtherprocess improvements. This potential has already been fully realised in key areas of the businessand continues to help them deliver unsurpassable customer service levels and secure tangibleoperational improvements across their facility,” Belgravium stated.

Hermes UK handles more than 115 million collections and deliveries per year working withcompanies of all sizes.
