Kerry Logistics, a leading Asian logistics service provider, has opened the first phase of itsProduct Customisation and Consolidation Centre (PC) in Hong Kong targeting leading fashion and
retail brands while focusing on greener supply chains.Located in Tai Po Industrial Estate in the New Territories which is one of the three mainregions of Hong Kong, the 23,876 sqm facility boasts a number of energy and environmental features.It has incorporated green technology into the design and construction. For example, mitigationmeasures for air, noise and water pollution were applied during the construction period.
Other environmental designs include building materials with high solar reflectance, a roof whichis organically ‘greened’ to reduce the heat island effect and a rainwater irrigation system. Otherfeatures include a high-energy performance air-conditioning system able to achieve 14% energysavings and a fresh water plumbing installation that can attain 25% water savings. Moreover, solarand wind energy are widely employed throughout the building.
Kerry Logistics said these services will enable its customers to reduce inventory and costs,save time, improve efficiency and allow for products to be delivered directly to stores anywhere inthe world.
The facility was built in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design)which is an internationally recognised green building certification system and the nationallyaccepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.The building is also compliant with HK-BEAM (Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment Method),an initiative to measure, improve, certify and label the whole-life environmental sustainability ofbuildings and one of the leading schemes in the world, Kerry Logistics explained.
“As demand grows for green logistics solutions, our company is focused on reducing carbonemissions and ultimately the carbon footprint for products processed through the facility,supporting our customers’ own green product targets,” the Hong Kong-based global logistics companysaid.
Following a phased opening during 2010, the PC facility will become fully operational inFebruary 2011, Kerry Logistics concluded.
In July this year, Kerry Logistics announced plans to build a new major logistics centre inXiamen, south-eastern China, to prepare for the growing trade in the region with Taiwan. Inaddition, the company wants to strengthen its fashion logistics network in mainland China withthree more facilities scheduled to be built in Shanghai, Chongqing and Kunshan by 2011. Currently,Kerry Logistics is managing over 40 fashion and retail companies, most of which are internationalbrand leaders.
