The UPS Foundation has announced nine grants worth nearly $2 million dedicated to environmentalprogrammes and organisations worldwide.
The grants will address issues of climate change, renewable energy, resource conservation andother environmental causes that are championed by UPS volunteers.
Among the different grants, The Nature Conservancy received $600,000 to continue supportingsustainable forests in China and Kenya, and for continued efforts in Brazil toward developing acarbon offset programme. The World Resources Institute was awarded $300,000 to support its “GreenHouse Gas Protocol” initiative aimed to establish credible and effective emissions accounting andreduction programmes.
Other environmental organisations to receive grants from The UPS Foundation include Keep AmericaBeautiful, Earth Day Network, The National Arbor Day Foundation, The National Park Foundation, TheNational Council for Science and the Environment, The Student Conservation Association, Inc andLegambiente Liguria Onlus.
Eduardo Martinez, director of philanthropy and corporate relations for The UPS Foundation,commented: “UPS employees are actively engaged in building stronger and more sustainablecommunities. Our financial contributions support the overall commitment of our people and ourcommunities as they work to improve the planet.”
In 2008, The UPS Foundation added environmental sustainability to its official mainphilanthropic areas. Grants are provided to both US and international organisations. Local grantsare recommended by UPS employee committees, reaffirming the belief that global issues are sometimesbest solved with local solutions, the company added.
