UPS hikes rates for US customers

UPS customers in the USA will be paying more to ship with the package company next year.


UPS released new published rates for 2012, including a net increase of 4.9 per cent for UPSGround packages and a net increase of 4.9 per cent on all UPS Air services and U.S.-origininternational shipments. The changes apply from January 2, 2012.

The rate increase for UPS Ground shipments is based on a 5.9 per cent increase in the baserate, less a 1 percentage point reduction to the index-based ground fuel surcharge. The rateincrease for UPS Air and international services shipments is based on a 6.9 per cent increase inthe base rate, less a 2 percentage point reduction to the index-based air and international fuelsurcharge.

Additionally, UPS Next Day Air Freight and UPS 2nd Day Air Freight rates for shipments withinand between the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico will increase 5.9 percent. UPS 3 Day Freight rateswill remain unchanged.

Rival FedEx already announced higher 2012 express rates for US customers as early asSeptember but has not yet said how FedEx Ground prices will change. FedEx Express will increaseshipping rates by a net average of 3.9 per cent for US domestic, US export and US import serviceseffective January 2, 2012. The full average rate increase of 5.9 per cent will be partially offsetby adjusting the fuel price threshold at which the fuel surcharge begins, reducing the fuelsurcharge by two percentage points.
