inauguration ceremony of new centre

FedEx Express has expanded its operations in Belgium with the opening of a new ‘sustainable’distribution centre in Machelen, a municipality in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The

development is part of a series of several investments in the country by FedEx over the last fouryears.

The 5,020 sqm facility employs 150 staff in Machelen, has a sorting area of 3,440 sqm and canhandle up to 9,500 packages a day.

As part of the company’s environmental commitment, the distribution centre features a wide rangeof energy-saving measures. These include a solar-powered roof, producing an average energyproduction of 144,000kWh per year – which equals the annual electricity needs of 30 households –and features that capture and use rainwater for the facility’s sanitary and cleaning systems.

In addition, the centre has an advanced ventilation system, enabling heat to be captured andused in the building. It also ensures the optimal use of daylight to reduce energy consumed forlighting.

The facility has received an E-Level rating of -5, according to the energy efficiency ratingsystem in Belgium, which FedEx claimed is a noteworthy example of sustainable design.

David Binks, senior vice president of operations for FedEx Europe, said: “FedEx has alwaysrecognised the importance of Belgium for its strategic place at the very heart of Europe. Theinauguration of this new facility is a strong testament to our trust and confidence in Belgium andthe economic opportunities we hope to create here.”
