GLS Netherlands doubles capacity and reduces emissions with new freight depot

GLS freight depot in Boxtel

GLS Netherlands has started operating a new freight facility in Boxtel, southern Netherlands, doubling the handling capacity while reducing mileage and emissions compared to the previous depot

in Ittervoort.

After launching a new parcel depot this summer, GLS Netherlands is now also strengthening itsfreight network with the relocation to Boxtel increasing the area of the previous site from 2,400sqm to 3,200 sm. The potential capacity gain at maximum utilisation thus equals 100% thanks to theefficient use of space, the company said.

The site also offers considerably more space for parking and maneuvering of long-distance andlocal traffic vehicles that are loaded and unloaded via the company’s 20 multi-functional gates.Four of the gates are currently reserved for long-haul trucks. The cargo is protected throughscanning at all major interfaces as well as integrated video surveillance and an alarm system, inline with high safety standards of GLS.

“We’re growing,” said Milo Kars, General Manager, GLS Netherlands. “With the more powerfuldepot, we are adapting to the growth in a sustainable way. Through the increased capacity, thegrowing order volumes can be processed quickly in a reliable and safe way also in the future, headded.

Also in environmental terms, the new site has a positive impact. The freight depot is muchcloser to the economic centres of Eindhoven, Den Bosch, Tilburg and Nijmegen reducing transportroutes by about 1,200 km on a daily basis with fuel consumption decreasing accordingly. In times ofextensive traffic, cargo can be thus handled more efficiently but at the same time in a moreeco-friendly way saving the resources.

“Using ecological and economical potential for improvement is a key part of our corporate policyand is consistent with our group-wide sustainability initiative ‘Think Green,” Kars explained. Thissustainable practice follows the environmental certification ISO 14001 GLS received in spring thisyear.
