DHL Supply Chain has announced plans to build a new distribution centre in Laredo, Texas,located at the US-Mexico border, to support cross-border supply chains between the two
countries.Scheduled for completion in July 2012, the 250,000 sq ft (23,225 sqm) facility, to be run incooperation with logistics unit Exel, will serve as a hub for DHL’s so-called Logistics WithoutBorders solution. This end-to-end supply chain solution combines proven customs brokerage andglobal forwarding services with the worldwide reach and value-added services of DHL. It gives DHLSupply Chain and Exel customers one-stop access to the tools, expertise and services necessary toship across the US-Mexico border.
The project is expected to generate 100 new jobs initially for the Laredo community, supportingDHL’s customers’ supply chains on both sides of the border. The service is primarily targeted atcustomers from sectors including technology, automotive, engineering and manufacturing.
Logistics operations at the site will support customers’ international supply chains managedunder DHL’s Logistics Without Borders service. It will include comprehensive managed transportationservices, a large trailer yard, warehousing, cross-docking, US and Mexico customs and brokerage,drayage, bonded warehousing, and value-added services such as configuration. Logistics serviceswill be backed by an integrated and bilingual information technology platform that tracksinventory, facilitates and exchanges documentation, and connects into the customs clearanceprocess.
The distribution centre will incorporate sustainability features including energy efficientlighting, landscaping and building materials, as well as low-flow plumbing and a recyclingprogramme. DHL aims to obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificationfor the site. It would be the first LEED-certified distribution centre in Exel’s North Americanreal estate network and in the city of Laredo.

This build-to-suit site in Laredo will offer customers the latest in real estate,security and logistics features and offers the potential for a phase two expansion as well.”
