Brazilian postal operator Correios has awarded a “national connectivity” contract to the globaltelecommunications provider BT to connect more than 7,000 sites, including corporate, regional and
local offices all over the country.The five-year deal worth £133 million was described by BT as “a milestone in the development ofits business in Latin America”. The company said it will provide Correios with a resilient, agileand flexible service to support the Correios’ growth, enabling easy deployment of new siteconnections and future requirements.
In concrete terms, BT will provide Correios with a fully managed WAN (Wide Area Network)solution connecting 6,800 branch offices with low-speed satellite links and 285 corporate officeswith high-speed links integrated to the domestic backbone of BT’s global MPLS (Multi Protocol LabelSwitching) network. The contract also comprises equipment provision and the implementation,maintenance and operation of Correios’ network.
José Luiz Alves do Nascimento, Coordinator of Correios’ Network Implementation Task Force, said:“Integration is a decisive factor for the success of a company with operations covering a countryof continental dimensions. In this context, BT will help Correios improve its position as aprovider of reliable solutions to our clients.”
Last week, BT was selected by DHL as the Global Innovation Partner of its DHL InnovationInitiative to develop new sustainable logistics and technical solutions.
Present in all 5,565 Brazilian cities, Correios processes about 35 million letters, telegrammesand packages daily. Last year, it delivered 8.8 billion items to approximately 40 millionaddresses. The postal operator has a workforce of more than 107,000 employees, of which 55,000 arepostmen. It operates a network of 12,000 post offices, an online post office, 6,500 product salespots, 10,000 classification and distribution units with a fleet comprising 4,500 vehicles; 13,000motorcycles; 22,000 bicycles and 14 nocturnal airlines for urgent mail.
In 2010, Correios generated total revenues of R$ 13.32 billion with the net profit amounting toR$ 826.64 million.
