DPD Germany has officially started the construction of a new parcel hub in Nuremberg, southernGermany, according to ecological standards to link German and European operations while securing
jobs in the long run.The company has invested €20 million in the new sorting centre with an area of 60,000 sqm andwill move to the new location in spring 2012.
Bernd Friedel, Regional Managing Director of DPD, commented: “The new building will ensure thatNuremberg will remain one of the most important DPD sites in Germany and Europe. In addition, theeco – friendly construction of the site in Nuremberg will serve as a role model for our entirenetwork.”
Starting operations in spring 2012, the depot will have the capacity to sort up to 15,000packages per hour thanks to the modern sorting technology which more than doubles the currentperformance. With increasing parcel volumes, DPD also plans to gradually increase the number ofemployees. There are currently 380 workers in Nuremberg and about 180 delivery vehicles aredeployed at the location.
The Nuremberg branch is already an important hub within the international DPD network, forexample for shipments to Czech Republic or Italy. The existing depot in Nuremberg has been locatedin the port area since 1990.
When constructing the new hub, DPD will consider sustainable design and environmental protectionrequirements. For example, solar cells on the roof of the facility will deliver energy whilegeothermal energy will be used for heating and cooling the office building.
