Striking workers at FedEx’s European air hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport returned to workyesterday after several days of industrial action that disrupted flights.
This end to the work stoppage followed a weekend vote by unions to go back to work and to awaitfurther talks on May 24 before deciding on further action.
“On May 16, 2011, all employees were back to work. We will continue to negotiate in good faithand hope to resolve the situation as soon as possible. The next round of negotiations will takeplace next week,” a FedEx Express Europe spokeswoman told CEP-Research.
Several hundred of the company’s 2,200 employees had stopped work in the night of May 11-12after annual pay talks between management and unions broke down. Unions are demanding a 5% pay riseand various additional allowances.
The work stoppage disrupted flights and sorting operations at the hub, which is thesecond-largest FedEx air hub after Memphis. Several flights had to be cancelled and others weredelayed. The company played down union claims of a backlog of 80,000 parcels, however.
The hub, with 72,000 sqm of sorting space, has capacity to sort 61,500 documents and packagesper hour.
