DHL Express has opened a new terminal in Malmö, southern Sweden, to expand capacity and improveoperational efficiency.
The 4,000 sqm building is designed to enable more efficient handling of express shipmentsthrough increased automated sorting and also by direct loading from the sorting system into thedistribution trucks. The terminal is conveniently located near to motorway connections to improveservice to and from the area. The new premises have replaced the old building in Limhamn which hasbeen outgrown.
The Malmö terminal is the DHL Express gateway for southern Sweden and processes all airshipments arriving from and departing to Copenhagen Airport, which lies on the other side of theOresund bridge that links Denmark and Sweden.
“DHL Express is delighted to have opened the new terminal. The size of the terminal and itsadvanced equipment put us in a good position to be able to give our customers the best service aswe will be able to expand further. The investment in this terminal will benefit both our employeesand our customers,” said Ted Söderholm, CEO of DHL Express Sweden.
The need for a larger terminal has long existed, according to the company. In particular, direct loading will speed up overall handling times by about 30 minutes and mean that DHL Expresswill be able to collect later and deliver earlier to customers.
“With direct loading, we can streamline and save time. We can unload the trucks directly inthe hall from a platform at the same height as the vehicle and with protection from the weatherconditions. The sorting machine means manual handling is reduced, which also gives a better andsafer working environment for our employees,” added Thommy Hall, depot manager in Malmö.
The fully-automated sorting machine can process up to 1,800 items per hour. All shipmentspassing through the terminal are scanned. The label is read at the same time as the shipment ismeasured and weighed so that the correct volume weight goes into the system.
Shipments can be directly loaded into air cargo containers to be loaded onto outbound flightsfrom nearby Copenhagen Airport. The terminal has high security levels, and all air cargo shipmentsare X-rayed, the company pointed out.
