DHL showcases innovations at Shanghai 2010 Expo

DHL presents cargo efficiency

DHL is presenting sustainability and environmental innovations at Shanghai’s Expo 2010 which isexpected to draw more than 70 million visitors over the next six months and set a new record as the

biggest-ever world exhibition.

Deutsche Post DHL said it has partnered with the Urban Planet pavilion, the centerpiece Chinesetheme pavilion presenting the Expo’s overall theme “Better City, Better Life”. A total of 240countries and organisations are exhibiting at the 2010 Expo which covers an area of 5.4 squarekilometers.

“As the world’s biggest logistics provider, we recognise a special responsibility to use ourcore competencies to minimise the impact on the environment and give back to the larger society,”said Frank Appel, Chief Executive Offer of Deutsche Post DHL. “We are committed to continuing toinvest in green technologies and want to demonstrate at the Expo what we consider innovative, sustainable logistics.”

In the first part of the pavilion, the ascending “Road of Crisis” visualises the destruction ofthe planet. In the second section, the descending “Road of Solutions” presents concepts for abetter, greener future. This is where DHL presents ten examples for implementation ofcarbon-neutral and carbon-efficient concepts, products and services from its climate protectionprogramme, GoGreen products, environmentally friendly transport technologies and new concepts foreffective City Logistics.

On the “Road of Solutions”, the DHL Smart Truck calculates the most efficient delivery route.Traffic jams, detours and instant orders are managed cleverly, reducing city traffic and savingemissions. Another example for “cleaner” City Logistics is the project “Bring Buddy”. Incollaboration with universities and inspired by the idea to transport parcels in cities without theuse of cars, DHL reviews alternative concepts for avoiding inner city traffic. For instance, peoplethat already move across the city could carry parcels. Mobile phones work as information anddocumentation tools. Social networks become genuine networks. A third example is eco-friendlybuildings which are an important step to saving resources and emissions. DHL complies with thelatest standards when building new facilities, solar panels are used or rainwater gets collected. All these measures help to protect the climate – and minimise operation costs.

As the “Road of Solutions” picks up on discussions on renewable energies and measures loweringemissions, on the intelligent recycling of raw materials, and on the integration of nature incities, DHL will use the opportunity to invite customers to the Expo to get a lively impression ofthe Group’s “green” activities and to organise symposia and discussion panels.

The Expo 2010 is also the culmination of DHL’s commitment to the ‘Germany and China’ (‘Deutschland und China’) project. Reflecting DHL’s extensive business presence throughout China, theproject has visited six major cities in China over three years – Chongqing, Guangzhou, Nanjing,Shanghai, Shenyang and Wuhan. Visitors will see this unique cooperation between China and Germanyexpressed in The DuC Germany & China House, the DuC Urban Academy and in the permanent DuCsteles in the official German Pavilion Balancity.
