In the wake of four hurricanes that have struck Haiti in the past few weeks, DHL and the citizensof south Florida have pulled together to provide much needed support to the Caribbean nation.
On September 20, DHL flew 50,000 pounds (22.7 tonnes) of food, clothing and non-perishableitems to the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, using a B727 cargo plane. Officials from DHL’sAmericas headquarters in Plantation, Fla, and the city of Miami also travelled to Haiti to offersupport to the Haitian people and ensure that supplies are delivered in a timely manner.
“We are committed to sharing our core competence in logistics and transportation to supportdisaster relief efforts wherever it is needed around the world,” said Gilbert Castro, head of theDHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) for the Americas. “We are pleased to be in a position to providesupport to the people of Haiti.”
DHL has a longstanding commitment to global disaster relief efforts. Immediately followingthe recent series of storms, DHL logistics expertise was deployed to Turks & Caicos to provideexpertise in palletizing, sorting, prioritizing and creating an efficient inventory process forrelief supplies.
Other major disaster relief efforts this year include delivery of 15 tonnes of suppliesfollowing the earthquake in Sichuan, China, a three-week deployment of 12 volunteer experts to helprelief supplies after the Myanmar cyclone, and transportation of water purification systems toEcuador and Bolivia following severe flooding.
