FedEx adds Mexico-US air capacity

FedEx Express has followed UPS by increasing air capacity to and from Mexico shortly after itannounced the launch of domestic services in the country.

FedEx Mexico announced that an MD10 freighter is now operating daily flights to and fromMonterrey in northern Mexico. This has increased available capacity from 90,000 pounds (40 tonnes)to about 135,000 pounds (61 tonnes). FedEx previously used a B727F on Monterrey routes, accordingto website information.

“This change reinforces the commitment of FedEx Express in Mexico to provide its clients accessto the global market,” the company said in a statement. According to the company’s online LatinAmerica factsheet, it operates international flights to Monterrey, Toluca and Guadalajara (sixweekly MD10 flights each), and Cancún/Mérida (five weekly Convair services).

UPS said in August that it has upgraded flights to Mexico by introducing an A300-600 freighteron its five times a week Louisville – Mexico City route, replacing a smaller capacity B757-200freighter. This increased its international capacity in the Mexican market by 66%.

FedEx announced in late August that, as of October 6, it will introduce FedEx Express Nacionalas a domestic next-business-day service offering a 10:30 delivery service and an end-of-working-dayservice. It will use air hubs in Toluca and San Luis Potosí to provide the service, reportedly witha fleet of five cargo planes operating 23 weekly flights supported by a ground fleet of 247vehicles.
