DHL France has celebrated the successful first anniversary of offering the GoGreen service andunveiled short-term targets for the CO2 emissions compensation scheme. The anniversary was
highlighted at the “Buy&Care” trade fair in Lyon from December 2-5.GoGreen, launched by DHL parent Deutsche Post World Net in 2005, compensates, at a client’srequest and for an increased payment of 2%, the CO2 emissions generated by a shipment via differentenvironmental projects. About 15 major French clients, including Kenzo and Le Bon Marché, havesigned up to the environmental initiative over the last year.
Only one year after its introduction in France, DHL GoGreen has enabled the company to offset350 tons of CO2 emissions. This will allow DHL to implement a series of internal and externalmeasures related to environmental protection such as propulsion systems or alternative fuel, installation of solar panels in India and Sri Lanka replacing kerosene, and a new project for thereduction of methane emissions which are even more noxious than carbon dioxide. Other plannedinitiatives include reforestation of tropical forests in Asia and South America and supportingdecentralised projects concerning solar energy.
Florence Noblot, CEO DHL International Express France, emphasised the importance of GoGreen: “ With DHL GoGreen, we have proved once again our sense for innovation. Thanks to this pioneerspirit, we are the only transport provider to offer this green solution to our clients. From nowuntil 2010, DHL Express France aims to achieve 5% of its international shipments via this solution, which would represent about 260,000 shipments, or about 2,000 tonnes of compensated CO2 emissions.”
Jean-Louis Schmitt, responsible for delivery and shipping at Le Bon Marché, a LVMHsubsidiary, confirmed: “With LVMH being the precursor in terms of environmental projects, wethought it would be interesting to support DHL GoGreen. This product really allows Bon Marché tocontribute in a concrete way to the preservation of environment. In only one year, this greensolution enabled us to offset 6.4 tons of CO2 for 236 shipments delivered.”
