UPS has strengthened its presence in the Mexican express market by increasing air capacity onroutes to the USA. It has also continued to expand its network in the country in recent months.
The US integrator upgraded its Mexico services as of July 29 with the introduction of anAirbus A300-600 freighter to replace a smaller capacity Boeing 757-200F. The plane is now operatingfive times a week from the UPS Worldport hub in Louisville to Mexico City. The move has increasedthe company’s international air cargo capacity in the Mexican market by 66%, UPS Mexico said in astatement.
“The deployment of this A300-600 allows us to continue offering the most complete portfolioof express logistics services in Mexico,” said Griselda Hernandez, UPS Mexico countrymanager. “And these aircraft are manufactured for UPS to comply with extremely stringentoperational, environmental and safety standards.”
UPS added that the deployment of the A300-600 is just the latest in a series of actions tostrengthen its operations in Mexico, most recently by opening the UPS Center in Villahermosa,Tabasco, earlier in July. So far this year, UPS has expanded in south-east Mexico with newlocations including Coatzacoalcos, Ciudad del Carmen, Tuxtla Gutierrez and in Campeche. It wasreported earlier this year that UPS, which opened 15 new locations in Mexico last year to take itsnetwork to 35 locations, was planning a further eight new offices during 2008.
In a separate move, UPS is targeting Mexican SMEs with the launch of its ‘EntrepreneurialSpirit Award’. The contest, which runs until September 30, will award the three most innovative andsuccessful small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) in Mexico with cash prizes and Microsoft products.
UPS said it has partnered with the Ministry of Economy (SecretarÃa de EconomÃa) and Microsoftto launch the contest with the aim of recognising and supporting SMEs that implement innovativeideas in their business practices, and as a result, run successful organisations.
