DHL Asia Pacific last week conducted its community outreach program ‘DHL Volunteer Day’ in over 20 countries across Asia Pacific to encourage the spirit of volunteerismamong employees. This year’s events took place across the region from 6 to 10 August with 15,000DHL employees participating in community engagement programs.
In Japan, more than 1,000 employees across DHL’s business units – DHL Express,DHL Exel Supply Chain and DHL Global Forwarding – engaged in the Corporate Sustainability Programduring the ‘DHL Volunteer Day.’ Activities included cleanup projects in local neighbourhoods; abeach cleanup in Kanagawa Prefecture in cooperation with the non-profit Japan LifesavingAssociation (JLA); and a blood donation drive for the Japanese Red Cross Society.
At DHL Japan, the Corporate Sustainability Program is being implemented basedon four themes – Supporting Future Generations, Contributing to Communities, Working TowardsEnvironmental Conservation and Providing Emergency Relief in the Wake of Natural Disasters.
In Hong Kong, about 100 DHL employees helped 80 underprivileged children havea chance to get ‘In Touch with Nature’ and experience organic farming and ways to contribute toenvironmental protection. ‘In Touch with Nature’ was organized in partnership with the HansAndersen Club, a non-governmental organisation that provides practical help and support for thewell-being of children and young people in Hong Kong. DHL employees, together with the children,spent a day to learn more about environmental protection, experience organic farming and volunteerfor the farm on wall mural coloring and weed cutting.
“We support the Hong Kong Government’s mission to build a greener city, and asa company we will do our part to raise the awareness of environmental protection among the city’snext generation,” said Ms. Connie Tang, General Manager of DHL Express. “The enthusiastic responseto ‘In Touch with Nature’ shows that our employees genuinely embrace DHL’s caring culture.”
In addition, a ‘DHL Blood Donation Station’ was set up at the DHL officegiving employees an opportunity to donate blood. DHL’s community commitment also extends tonurturing local talent. Mr. Kelvin Leung, CEO, North Asia, DHL Global Forwarding, Mr. Alan Wong,Director of Marketing, DHL Express Hong Kong and Ms. Betsy Chan, Director of Global-MultinationalCustomers, DHL Express Hong Kong shared their experiences and insights on the logistics industrywith the youth in support of the government’s Youth Employment Start (Y.E.S.) – which providesone-stop advisory and support services on employment and self-employment to youths aged between15-29.
Partnership with Y.E.S. is one of DHL’s signature corporate sustainabilityinitiatives. It provides an opportunity for Hong Kong’s youth to participate in dialogue with DHL’sexecutives and employees, in DHL’s award-winning training programs as well as a mentorship programwhich gives participants individual attention during their career search and development.
