DHL Express Austria plans to change 10% of its vehicle fleet over to alternative fuels to boost itsactivities in sustainable logistics. It has recently been commended for its environmental
activities.For the third time in a row, all of its 15 branches have been certified by the internationalinspection, verification, testing and certification company SGS according to ISO 14001environmental management standards. DHL Express said it remains the only company in the AustrianCEP industry with nationwide environmental certification.
Martin Hermesch, managing director of DHL Express Austria, said the certification is theresult of consistent efforts in sustainable development. “We have an environmental team of 15people, responsible for implementing environmental projects on a local level. For 2008, we haveplanned precise CO 2- related targets for each office,” he said.
Additionally, DHL Express Austria has been nominated for the state award in transportation,granted by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transportation, Innovation and Technology (Bmvit)due to its participation in the study about the implementation of alternative fuels in intercitytransport.
The implementation of alternative fuels is a key component of DHL’s environmental strategy,Hermesch said. “In 2008 we will use alternative fuels for at least 10% of our total vehicle fleetwhich accounts for 50 delivery vehicles nationwide.”
Moreover, about 500 DHL delivery staff are being trained in fuel-efficient driving by theenvironmental organisation “klima:aktiv” with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions by 5% to 10% by theend of 2008.
