TNT launches CO2 reduction programme ”Planet Me”

TNT has launched a major and ambitious new environmental strategy, titled “Planet Me”, whichuniquely aims to cut carbon dioxide levels at both a corporate usage and private employee level.

The inititative involves not only reducing the group’s global carbon “footprint” but alsoencouraging TNT’s 159,000 employees to do the same in their private lives.

“There is a strong business case for Planet Me,” said TNT CEO Peter Bakker. “Customers,governments, our employees and the general public increasingly look at how companies respond toglobal warming. As a leader in our industry we feel a responsibility to proactively address this.This is the start of our quest to become the first zero emissions express and mail company in theworld”.

TNT is installing a certified system to measure, report and manage its CO2 emissions. It willimplement CO2 reduction initiatives in its eight most important operational areas: aviation,buildings, business travel, company cars, partnering with customers, operational fleet,procurement, and investments. Furthermore, employees will also be encouraged to use less energy athome and on the road.

Major express companies worldwide are increasingly tackling the green challenge, and PlanetMe is a further initiative in TNT’s already busy environmental programme.

TNT’s Driving Clean project aims to renovate the existing global transport fleet to emit lessemissions and the company is currently testing 20 biofuel trucks in India and 53 in theNetherlands. Over 160 vehicles are also being run on compressed natural gas in Germany, whilezero-emission electric vehicle are being tested in London and Rotterdam.
