TNT opens expanded Kuala Lumpur airport gateway

TNT has unveiled its new RM 8 million International Gateway at Kuala Lumpur International Airport(KLIA) and announced plans for a new direct, next-day delivery service between Penang and Singapore

on the Asia Road Network (ARN).

The new KLIA International Gateway, spanning over 14,500 sq ft, is more than three times thesize of its previous facility. It is fully-equipped with the latest technology, including aninfra-red scanner for swifter measurement of the volumetric weight of shipments for enhancedclearance, and is undergoing certification for TAPA ‘A’ accreditation.

TNT Express has also added five additional 3-tonne trucks that travel daily between itsNational Operations Centre in Petaling Jaya and the new KLIA International Gateway, ensuring thaturgent deliveries are processed even more swiftly.
 
In addition, the company announced plans to launch a next-day service betweenPenang-Singapore on the Asia Road Network during the next few months, operated five times a weekwith four 8-tonne trucks. The direct PEN-SIN service will be 30% faster than the previous roaddelivery service, while offering cost savings of up to 40% compared to air freight.

The new service will increase capacity on the Asia Road Network by 20%, and is expected tocontribute a further 30% growth in road network volumes.

“The expanded KLIA facility will function as a key road hub for the Asia Road Network whichcurrently links Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam and with plans to reach China by yearend,” said Onno Boots, regional managing director of TNT Southeast Asia.

“The enhancement of the Asia Road Network will be a boon for businesses in electronicsmanufacturing industries,” he added. “Both cities have well-established industries and the servicewill offer significant synergies in supply chain management.”

We’ve enjoyeddouble-digit year-on-year growth and we expect the new direct PEN-SIN service to contribute afurther 30% growth in volumes on the Asia Road Network.”

TNT said it has invested a total of EUR8 million (RM 35million) to date in the development ofthe Asia Road Network. It now links Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam with plans to reachChina through the north-eastern border of Vietnam by the end of 2007. Once completed, it will coveralmost 60% and link over 120 cities across 4,000 kilometres.
