TNT Express has invested GBP 7 million and created more than 100 new jobs in a regional depot atPreston in north-west England. The facility was due to be officially opened today by local MP David
Borrow.The 10-acre site at Aston Way, Moss Side Park, which went into operation last autumn, is thelatest addition to TNT’s nationwide network of more than 60 depots and is the largest TNT depot inthe UK with 145 employees and 67 loading bays.
Handling tens of thousands of business parcels and packages every week, the depot provides acritical strategic link for businesses throughout the North-West and up into Scotland, TNT said.
The depot is also at the leading edge of innovation for TNT. New high-tech scanning devisesfor warehouse staff, ‘in-cab’ mobile worker units for drivers and the latest sortation machinetechnology were all trialled at Preston before being rolled out to other TNT depots around the UK.
Preston Depot General Manager Shane O’Donnell said: “We will double up as a depot andregional sortation centre. This gives us the advantage of collecting parcels and packages fromcustomers later in the working day and get them delivered earlier than ever before in the UK andEurope.”
