TNT chief executive Peter Bakker said its Brazilian operation was aiming for double-digit annualgrowth after acquiring domestic leader Mercúrio earlier this year.

“TNT is aiming for double-digit growth in Brazil as the domestic express market booms. TNTbecomes the first express services company in this country to offer both domestic and internationaldeliveries,” Bakker said at a press briefing in Sao Paolo yesterday.
Mercúrio has 15% of the domestic market and has developed the largest owned network in southand south-east Brazil, connecting 3,300 cities.
The Brazilian carrier has been expanding into north-east Brazil, Chile, Argentina andUruguay. The acquisition also provides TNT with the platform to develop its South American roadexpress network.
Mercúrio employs over 6,000 people and has more than 100 depots and over 2,000 vehicles, adding to TNT’s existing 33 depots in Brazil. Mercúrio’s revenues last year were EUR 190 million ina domestic express market worth EUR 1.3 billion and which is growing by 15% a year, said TNT.
“Brazilian customers reacted positively to the acquisition of Mercúrio by TNT,” said TNTBrazil general manager Roberto Rodrigues.
“They can save time and money by using the same local provider for both domestic andinternational express deliveries. TNT expands Mercúrio’s services offer,” he added.
