DHL is sponsoring a new competition in Formula One motor racing – a trophy to the driver whorecords the most fastest laps in the upcoming season, which begins in Australia on Saturday, 18
March.The fastest lap is recorded in each race. Former world champion Michael Schumacher has thelargest number in F1 history, 76, followed by Alian Prost (41) and Nigel Mansell. Damon Hill drovethe fastest lap of all time in the Italian Grand Prix in 1993 at an average speed of just under250km/h.
“By linking the DHL brand to fastest lap… we want to show that you can be fast only ifperformance, endurance and reliability are finely tuned and all team members pull together,” saidWolfgang Giehl, director of corporate advertising and branding at DHL’s parent, Deutsche Post WorldNet.
DHL is also the official logistics provider for F1 and will move some 300 tons of race cars,replacement parts, pit-crew equipment and other material for the series each weekend.
“The DHL Fastest Lap Trophy recognises the very things that make Formula One: speed andorganisation,” commented Formula One chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.
