DHL has announced plans for a new 60,000 sqm Logistics Center in Unna, north-west Germany. Thelogistics campus will be operated by DHL Exel Supply Chain and used especially for customers in the
consumer goods industry.Construction on the first section of the site will begin in mid-January and the campus willgo into service in autumn 2007. The decision for Unna signifies an expansion of DHL Exel SupplyChain’s activities in the eastern Ruhr region, with the company planning to create up to 350 jobsby the end of 2007.
The concept of a “logistics campus”, implemented by DHL for the first time at this locationin Germany, is new. Large warehouse storage capacity as well as high standardizations in warehousestorage structure, IT solutions and logistics services are combined with the industry-specificorientation of the entire facility. This creates synergies and qualitatively high-value economicsolutions for all partners through the consolidation of mail streams and the reduction of transportcosts, among other things.
The standardized structure of the facility also allows DHL to react flexibly at any time tochanging customer orders and to receive into store and handle larger amounts of goods in thewarehouse. The site itself offers sufficient possibilities for expanding the Logistics Center forfuture customers.
Stefan Kurrle, head of DHL Exel Supply Chain in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, views theproject as trend-setting: “Logistics is a growth market with a huge need for flexible andinnovative solutions. In Unna, we are creating a facility where we can offer our customers an idealoverall concept, based on location, size and equipment. We are also planning the construction ofadditional campuses in Germany,” he said.
