GLS invests EUR 20 million on new barcode technology

GLS

GLS France is introducing 3,000 wireless barcode scanners this autumn to improve parcel deliverytracking as part of a EUR 20 million group investment across Europe.

Using GPRS technology, French clients will be able to track and trace deliveries in a moreadvanced manner using the so-called Uni-Scan system. Proof of delivery data will be transmitted inreal-time into the company’s central system, providing same-day tracking of shipment status.

In addition, GLS France has installed new data reading terminals throughout its hubs anddepots. These can handle 1,200 parcels an hour instead of the previous 400 parcels.

GLS parcels in France now also carry the group’s “Common Label” that can be read by all GLSdepots across Europe. This label carries a two-dimensional barcode, data on the relevant product orservice, and delivery information. GLS France said that it is the first GLS subsidiary using thisnew barcode and labelling technology.

The new scanner system is due to be rolled out throughout the GLS network in Europe byend-2008. This system harmonisation will increase the transparency of parcel deliveries and improvecoordination of national and international transportation processes, GLS France noted.
