TNT employees Walk the World against child hunger

Thousands of TNT employees on all continents joined the World Food Programme’s “Walk the World”fund-raising event on Sunday, May 21. A total of 760,000 people in more than 100 countries

participated in the annual event that is organised jointly by TNT and the WFP.

A diverse range of “walks” took place around the globe this year. Highlights included theclimbing of Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro by WFP workers, participation by world leaders andtop celebrities, and public support from Pope Benedict XVI. TNT staff took part in countless localevents, and organised their own fund-raising activities around the world.

The event is designed to raise funds for WFP schemes, increase public awareness of child hungeraround the world, and encourage individuals and all kinds of organisations to engage themselves inthe fight against child hunger. “The event, initiated three years ago by TNT, global provider ofexpress, mail and logistics services, aims to engage citizens worldwide, throughout the next decadeto achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of hungry people globally by2015,” said Arlene Mitchell, WFP Director of Walk the World.

In 2005, a total of €1.2 million was raised by the Walk the World event – which was used to feedmore than 70,000 children for an entire year through the WFP school food programme.
