We are now preparing for this,” he said. Hompo stressed, however, that “only littlesteps in the Far East” were planned and “we will not create any dramatic waves”.

The bills to privatise the post office which the re-elected Koizumi government submitted toParliament last month, should be passed within the next two weeks. Under the privatisation plan,Japan Post would be re-structured into a holding company with four subsidiaries – Postal Services,Post Office Network, Savings and Insurance. Under a 10-year gradual transition, the two financialsubsidiaries would be completely sold off, and a majority stake in the holding company would alsobe disposed of.
