Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) resumed talks last week, marking a significant development in an increasingly tense labour dispute that could see more than 55,000 postal workers go on strike later this month if an agreement isn’t reached.

The two sides returned to the bargaining table in Ottawa on April 30 and May 1, with the assistance of mediators from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS). Previous talks between the carrier and the union collapsed in March with both sides blaming the other for the impasse.

The March talks followed a national month-long strike during peak season late last year, which caused major disruption to postal services in the country.
