UPS hikes China-Europe surcharges by 50%

UPS today unveiled sizeable increases in peak surcharges from China to Europe amid tight capacity and rising operational costs, and just days after increases for US-bound shipments.

The US package giant will increase peak surcharges on shipments from China and Hong Kong to 19 countries in Europe with effect from November 15, which is just two weeks after the previous increases that took effect on November 1.

UPS informed customers that the surcharge for express shipments from China/HK to Europe will go up by nearly 50% from €1.33/kg to €1.99/kg, expedited shipments by 53% from €1.24/kg to €1.90/kg and express freight shipments by 23% from €2.88/kg to €3.54/kg.

There were already significant increases in surcharges for express and expedited shipments from China/HK to Europe on November 1.

Higher China/HK to US surcharges

The higher surcharges to Europe will come into effect one week after a similar move for shipments from China/Hong Kong to the U.S. as well as changes for shipments from other Asia origins to the U.S.

Effective November 8, 2020, the UPS surcharge for express shipments from China/Hong Kong to the U.S. will increase by 44% from $1.02/lb to $1.47/lb, for expedited goods by 46% from $0.98/lb to $1.43/lb and for express freight by 25% from $1.81/lb to $2.27/lb. These surcharges were last increased on October 25.

In parallel, surcharges for any shipment from Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand to the U.S. will increase from November 8. The surcharge for express shipments will increase from $0.34/lb to $0.45/lb, the surcharge for expedited goods will go up from $0.29/lb to $0.41/lb and the surcharge for express freight shipments will rise from $1.25/lb to $1.36/lb.
