DPD expands Amsterdam capacity by 60% with new depot

Amsterdam depot opening ceremony

DPD has opened an innovative distribution centre near Amsterdam, creating about 100 new jobs and expanding its parcel capacity by 60% for the Dutch metropolis region.

The 11,000 sqm facility at the Nieuwe Liede business park in Vijfhuizen, west of Amsterdam, expands the company’s capacity to 13.3 million parcels per year, answering to the growing demand in the Greater Amsterdam area. The new distribution centre was developed in collaboration with property developers Goodman on four hectares of land.

Like the HUB in Eindhoven that opened last year, the new DPD centre has the latest technology in use. Its hyper-modern LS-4000 CB sorting machine, also known as a ‘green sorter’, is the most energy efficient of its class and is more than four times more efficient than comparable sorting machines, according to the parcel carrier. With a capacity of 5,500 parcels per hour, it has more than enough flexibility to take on peaks.

Moreover, the building generates its own electricity. Its roof has approximately 2,000 solar panels, producing 648,000 watts.

Eric Dietz, CEO at DPD Nederland, said: “Our new Amsterdam depot in Vijfhuizen builds on the strategy initiated earlier with our HUB Eindhoven. We are equipped to meet the rapid growth of the parcel market and at the same time increase the level of our service. The new Amsterdam depot enables us to guarantee the speed and flexibility of our service. It falls entirely within DPD’s ambition to realise growth sustainably through innovation.”

DPD pointed out that the Amsterdam area, alongside Eindhoven and Rotterdam, is seen as one of the most important logistical hotspots in the Netherlands. By modernising and expanding, DPD is ready to answer the call of increasing demand in the future market, bringing international destinations closer by for senders and recipients alike.
