Amazon is investing in four more logistics locations in the US and Canada with new facilities at Chicago Rockford Airport, as well as in Idaho, Illinois and near Toronto.
In early October, the ceremonial opening of Amazon’s 18,000 sqm facility at Chicago Rockford Airport (RFD) marked the completion of another expansion project. More than 800 employees will ensure smooth operations.
During 2019, Amazon has rapidly expanded its presence at its gateway and hub airports. Daily Amazon Air flights started operating in September from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) and St. Louis Airport (STL). Its regional hub at Fort Worth Alliance Airport (AFW) is also set to open this month.
The company’s most recent announcement involves plans to open a fulfilment centre in Channahon, Illinois, creating more than 500 new, full-time jobs. Employees at the more than 92,000 sqm large facility will pick, pack and ship large customer items, such as sports equipment, patio furniture, fishing rods, pet food, kayaks, bicycles, and larger household goods.
Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s Vice President of Global Customer Fulfilment, said: “Illinois is a great place to do business and we are excited to continue our growth and investment in the state with our new fulfilment centre in Channahon. Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $4 billion in the state through its local fulfilment centre and cloud infrastructure, research facilities, and compensation to thousands of employees in the state.
“We are excited to create more than 500 new full-time jobs, in addition to the 11,000 current employees across the state, who receive industry-leading pay and benefits starting on day one.”
Furthermore, the company announced plans to open another fulfilment centre in Nampa, Idaho. It is expected to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs with comprehensive benefits and opportunities to work alongside Amazon robotics. The opening of the about 60,000 sqm large facility is scheduled for 2020 and will fulfil customer orders such as books, electronics and toys.
Boler Davis commented: “We’re excited to open our first customer fulfilment centre in Idaho and to bring more than 1,000 full-time jobs to the city. Amazon is committed to creating a positive economic impact in Nampa and enhancing the customer experience throughout the region.”
Meanwhile, the Toronto fulfilment centre will be located in Scarborough, in the eastern part of the Canadian city, creating 600 full-time jobs.
Employees at the about 92,000 sqm large facility will pack and ship small items to customers ranging from toys and baby products to small electronics. Moreover, it is going to be Amazon’s 12th fulfilment centre in the country and seventh in Ontario. Currently, there are operations facilities in Brampton, Mississauga, Milton, Caledon and Ottawa.
